Watch Leon explain the signs of a broken garage door spring, why the door should stay out of use and what our professional inspection covers. Read the full transcript below.
Read the full transcriptIn this video, Leon discusses the loud bang, visible spring gap and cable conditions that may accompany a spring failure. He also explains why continuing to use the opener can cause damage, and how we inspect the door and spring system before explaining repair options.
If you suspect a broken spring or hear an unexplained bang, stop using the door and keep people, pets and vehicles clear. Do not test the opener, pull the emergency release or try to lift the door. Leave spring, cable and related hardware work to a trained professional. A visible check alone cannot establish that the door is safe.
The video’s discussion of manual operation applies only when the door and springs are sound. If the cause of a bang is uncertain, leave the door in place and call us for an assessment.

0:02 — [music] Did you go to open your garage door and you heard a loud bang? Here's a couple of things you can look for. If it's a loud bang, [music] it's possibly a broken garage door spring. And here's how to check if it's that. up here on the springs there typically will be a gap in the torsion springs or if you have an extension spring [music] that runs along the track it'll be that will be broke and the cables will be loose.
0:34 — Now if your door is a double garage door then it [music] will have typically will have two springs. If it has two springs the cables will still be tight. If it has a single spring, these [music] cables will be loose if the garage door spring is broke.
0:51 — Also, if you do have a garage door opener, the garage door opener will may or may not lift the door if the spring is broke. If it's a double spring, uh it might still [music] lift it, although it will it could potentially break your motor.
1:06 — So, typically what I would do is I would unlatch and uh you know if if the garage door springs are solid, they're not broke, you should be able to still lift [music] your door properly. So, if there was a bang, if there was a loud bang and the garage door [music] spring isn't broke, then give us a call and we'll come out and check it out cuz could be something else that's about to break or something that snapped that is not visually able to see what it is.
1:33 — So, if you find out that your garage door spring is broken, uh this is not something you [music] want to attempt yourself unless you have training and understanding of how this works.
1:44 — Here's what we do at Blue J to make [music] sure that everything is safe. So, we will do a full inspection on your garage door as well as your spring system, making sure that everything is still [music] intact the way it's supposed to be in. And then what we will do is we will give you options on [music] what should be replaced as well as what you need.
2:08 — So if you need more information, you can give us a call here at the office and we can step you through u figuring out what the issue is or set an appointment for a technician to come out and give you a quote um and do a full assessment on your garage door. [music] >> [music]
